This week I am working in Phoenix, Arizona. While walking between my company’s downtown office and my hotel, I came across a park near the Phoenix Public Library where several flags are flying. Always curious about flags, I investigated. It turns out that they are the flags of the countries where Phoenix has a sister city.
Here are the flags (and the sister cities), from left to right:
- the Arizona flag
- Italy (Catania)
- Israel (Ramat Gan)
- Taiwan (Taipei)
- Czech Republic (Prague)
- Japan (Himeji)
- Mexico (Hermosillo)
- France (Grenoble)
- Ireland (Ennis)
- China (Chengdu)
- Canada (Calgary)
- the United States of America flag
My compatriots who live in Calgary could do worse than to visit their sister city of Phoenix now. Today was a typically sunny day, with the temperatures reaching the low 20s Celsius. The locals think that’s cold, but I’m enjoying my taste of winter in the Sonoran Desert.
